LEGAL REFLECTIONS ABOUT PRESENT HUNGER IN THE DEATH AND LIFE OF A SEVERINO

Abstract

Brazil’s come back to the World Hunger Map in 2022, after years of progress coping with it, pushes the reflection about its causes and its accountability. The country's commitment to Human and Fundamental Rights protects the adopted food and nutrition, as well as the ideals of fraternity, mobilize the questioning of what are the duties of civil society in this process. Literature, for its creative and imaginative expressiveness, allows looking at social phenomena from a holistic point of view, while connecting the reader to the theme through catharsis. João Cabral de Melo Neto’s “The Death and Life of a Severino” establishes the necessary bridge to talk about hunger and deepen its multifaceted yesterday and today. As an essay, this paper highlights the legal responsibility between civil society and facing the problem of hunger in Brazil in the 21st century, through a legal approach in the literature, presenting a critical analysis based on bibliographic and document review procedures. Considering the juridical principle of fraternity and a whole regulation of human and fundamental rights, not only the state but also civil society must engage in the fight against hunger.
