Social segregation produces deleterious effects on the ideals advocated by the nation, inferiorizes and subordinates historically disadvantaged groups and fosters an oppressive, unequal culture of domination of one class to the detriment of another and, in this context, violence, real or symbolic, is a mechanism in the hands of the holders of power in favor of its maintenance. And, in the rural context, these distinctions caused several criminal conflicts, stigmatized rural men and women, and delegitimized the actions of people, groups and advocates of agrarian reform. In this way, the objective was to analyze the characterization of the peasant as an enemy, this act being an instrument of maintenance of the dominant elite and of domination of the excluded. For that, the bibliographic method was used, based on books, reports and legislation. The people expelled from their lands, due to the expropriation of areas and commercialization, became dispossessed and the State, society and the media reproduced the notion of potential criminals and deserving of repression. Thus, by creating the figure of the “land invading enemy”, one has, as a consequence, its elimination from the “good society”, the loss of citizenship, privileging the interests of landowners and rural entrepreneurs.
