The “MINISTRY OF TRUTH” BEHIND 08.01.2023: The relationship between George Orwell's 1984 and the Bolsonaro government's fake news

Abstract

This paper aims to draw a parallel between the Ministry of Truth – state body responsible for rewriting history in the novel “1984” – and the Bolsonaro government's fake news factory in order to understand how disinformation culminated in the anti-democratic act of January 8, 2023. To accomplish this, an analysis will be conducted on how George Orwell's novel "1984" serves as a foundation for a critical analysis of law. Next, a relationship will be established between the Ministry of Truth and the Bolsonaro government's fake news factory. Finally, it will be studied how this fake news factory contributed to the anti-democratic acts that occurred on January 8, 2023, clarifying how this fact relates to the Ministry of Truth and the ongoing wars in the universe of "1984". In order to achieve these objectives, this theoretical research, which has a basic nature and qualifies as exploratory, promotes a bibliographic review procedure of authors related to law and literature, fake news, and Bolsonarism, namely Germano Schwartz (2006), Steve Levitsky (2018), and Cesar Calejon (2021).
